In the summer of 2016, Design Lab embarked on a design-directed research journey with 10  SOLA students and Paul Roncken from Wageningen University, to explore the possibilities of landscape-centric cities.

We looked at Canterbury, New Zealand, with its current population of 600,000 people, and asked – “how can this place flourish with a similar area, and population to the Netherland’s 16 million people?”

We imagined possibilities for the landscape, from mountains to the sea, from braided rivers to river mouths, from aquifers to the atmosphere.

We imagined new urban forms, based on key landscape types found across Canterbury:
